Everyone always remembers to check the batteries in the smoke detector. We’ve had it drilled in at such a young age that the smoke detector is a must in every home. What many people forget, is Carbon Monoxide. Carbon Monoxide, or CO, is a colorless, odorless gas that causes poisoning and death in a few short hours. It’s impossible to self-detect CO and therefore the fatality rate is quite high. Installing a carbon monoxide alarm in one’s home can detect minute traces of carbon monoxide in the air. Just like the smoke detector, once installed, don’t forget to check the batteries!

Waitomo

Last week I went to Waikato with a couple of friends. We spent the night there at a cheap cabin but has all basic facilities, e.g. bed, toilet and shower, and kitchen. We visited the three caves namely, Waitomo, Aranui, and Ruakuri caves. The highlight of that adventure was the glowworm. As the name implies, worms that glow. Actually they are not worms but fly larvae, and they do glow. It was such a unique experience. We had to ride a boat to be able to go inside the cave. It was pitch black inside, and cold and quiet, and up above the cave ceiling we saw hundreds and hundreds of glowworms. It was such a magnificent view, like looking at stars in the heavens.

My Utopia

Magic wand

Image via Wikipedia

I have often thought of a perfect world, but then, nothing is perfect. However, I often wondered, as inhabitants of this earth, we can make it close to perfect to make it a much better place to live in. I wish I had a magic wand that in just a wave, I can change the world. If I had the power, I would change a number of things.  In my altered world, there is no class in society; everyone is equal, no rich, no poor. Everyone should have equal opportunities and rights. In accordance to this, gender equality is also present. I often wonder what the world would be like without money, I might try that one too.

Nowadays, almost everyone has an iPod, iPad, MP3 player, laptop, just about any device where you can play music. While commuting to work, walking, working out, or even relaxing at home, I listen to music. I like various types of music depending on my mood. To start my day, I often listen to pop and dance songs that hype me up. When I go to bed, especially after work, I listen to mellow music, sometimes instrumental classical music. Depending on my mood, I also listen to rock metal and alternative music. I like alternative the most, it is not noisy, I like the beat and rhythm and there are a lot of bands that play really good music. I do not like listening to rap music, especially when I cannot understand what they say. For me, that is not music to my ears.

In my 25 years of existence, I have always been in the company of my family. I was still living with them even in my university years and even after finding a job. But then, I felt I had to widen my horizons and improve myself and our standard of living. That is why I came to New Zealand, land of the free. It opened so many opportunities for me and I got a very good job. I am able to travel here too, which is one of my passions in life. Even though this is far from home, I know I made the right choice. I am open to still go further, to places unknown to me. That is an exciting experience.

Let us say I won $1000 from a game show and I am allowed to spend it on anything but only in one store. First thing that comes to my mind is Kathmandu, the travel and outdoor store. I love to travel and try outdoor activities. And with these activities, one has to have proper gear. Kathmandu offers a variety of clothes, travel equipment, bags, etc. But they often come at a price that exceeds my budget. So lucky me if I had an instant thousand dollars. I would spend it on jackets because they produce really high quality jackets and I like their style. I need it especially winter is approaching.

After hearing of a tragic house fire that was started by a dropped cigarette when its owner fell asleep, I began doing some research into ways to keep fires from spreading. Much to my surprise I found that there are products called fire retardant. I was amazed to find such a variety of products designed to keep things from burning. It would seem that most of the sprays are very comparable in price and ingredients. Of course, I knew about fire retardant sleepwear for children, but I had no idea that there were sprays for indoor use and outdoor use as well. One can spray anything from walls to bedding and matresses, carpet to drapes, couches to Christmas trees. Outdoor sprays can be used on siding, eaves, and shingles. Paper, wood, or fabric craft projects can also be protected by spraying with a fire retardant. On my list of things to do today, I have written “fire retardant.” I am fascinated that at my age, 64, I can still find things I have not heard of before and that I can benefit from learning about them.

A Helping Hand

The National Health Service Norfolk and Norwic...

Image via Wikipedia

After graduating from university, it took some time before I landed a real job as a healthcare professional. I had to review for the local board exam and accomplish papers for that. During that time, I did private tutorials for grade school children. Either I would visit them in their house or they go to mine, whichever is convenient. It was an easy job, although low income and it was part time. I enjoyed it and I thought it was better to do something than nothing while waiting for a real job. Then at last a real job opportunity knocked on my door and I grabbed it instantly. The hospital that hired me is one of the biggest specialty hospitals in the country and they paid well too. And being a specialty hospital, they were able to provide me the training I need to further enhance my skills. I could say that I love my job as a healthcare professional where I can extend a helping hand to the sick and their family. It is a rewarding and fulfilling career.

I have my own lists of things to do and places to go. Greece ranks as first on my list. Greece, more formally known as Hellenic Republic, is located in Western Europe and has got a long history. It has a Mediterranean climate with very cold, freezing winters and hot, dry summers.  So why do I want to go to Greece? First, as I have mentioned, it has a long history. I want to go there to learn more about its past and how it shaped its present. Greece is also home to a colourful culture and I believe that it would be a different experience for me. Lastly, Greece is a beautiful country that offers unique landscapes, historic locations and calm seas. That is my dream vacation, on a yacht, sipping juice, enjoying tranquillity.

Rock n Roll to go

General Comments Off

Rock music has always been a family affair for me. My father grew up playing the drums and me and my brother learned the guitar. There are a lot of different rock styles which make the genre so appealing to me. I have never been in a band but I would like to start my own someday. Some of my favorite rock bands are Aerosmith, led zeppelin and black sabbath. The genre I least like in music is rap. For the most part of what I’ve heard, its all the same stuff. They do have different beats but almost all African Americans talk about is money and woman. It seems like there is very little diversity in this type of music, and that makes it unlikeable for myself.
